The Bay of Islands is one of New Zealand's most celebrated destinations — and one of its best for couples. Here's how to make the most of it.

Why the Bay of Islands is Perfect for Couples

The Bay of Islands has 144 islands, a warm subtropical climate, and a combination of natural beauty and historic charm that's hard to match anywhere in New Zealand. Russell — the oldest town in New Zealand — sits on the western shore of the bay and is the ideal base for exploring.

Sailing the Bay

Getting on the water is the defining Bay of Islands experience. Day cruises, dolphin watching, and private charters are all available from Russell and Paihia. The Cream Trip — a full-day cruise around the islands — is a classic. For something more intimate, book a private sailing charter.

Russell

Russell is small, charming, and completely unhurried. No traffic lights, no fast food, just pohutukawa trees, colonial buildings, and the waterfront. Walk the coastal track, visit the Pompallier Mission, and have dinner at The Gables.

Waitangi

A short ferry ride from Russell, the Waitangi Treaty Grounds is New Zealand's most significant historic site. The guided tour and cultural performance are genuinely excellent — allow 2–3 hours.

Paihia & Kerikeri

Paihia is the main tourist hub of the Bay of Islands — useful for booking activities and catching ferries, but not particularly romantic. Kerikeri, 20 minutes north, is more charming and has excellent restaurants and a good farmers market on Saturday mornings.

Where to Stay

For a private, romantic base in the Bay of Islands, Wahapu Lodge in Russell is the finest option. Nestled in native bush above Pomare Bay, it offers sea views, outdoor bath, and complete seclusion — while being a short walk from Russell's waterfront. Book direct for the best rate.
