Pouto Point is one of the most remote and rewarding corners of Northland. Here's everything worth doing on the peninsula.

Horse Trekking

Horse trekking at Pouto is one of the most memorable experiences in Northland. Rides take you along remote west coast beaches and open farmland, with views across the Kaipara Harbour and Tasman Sea. Suitable for all experience levels. Book in advance as spots fill quickly in summer.

Henare Horse Treks offers private guided treks exclusively for your group — 1 hour ($160pp), 2 hours ($260pp), or bespoke. Book directly at henarehorsetreks.co.nz.

Pouto Lighthouse Walk

The Pouto Lighthouse is a short walk from the lodges. The track takes you through coastal scrub and out to the lighthouse, which marks the entrance to the Kaipara Harbour — New Zealand's largest harbour. The views from the top are extraordinary, particularly at sunset.

Stargazing

Pouto Point has almost zero light pollution. On clear nights, the Milky Way is visible in full from the lodge deck. Bring a blanket and a bottle of wine. The best stargazing is typically from March to May when the Milky Way core is highest in the sky.

Sand Dunes

The Pouto dunes are among the largest in the North Island. You can walk or sandboard on them — a surprisingly exhilarating experience. The dunes are accessible from the road near the lighthouse.

Swimming & Beach Walks

The west coast beaches near Pouto are wild and largely deserted. The surf can be strong, so swimming conditions vary — always check before entering the water. The beach walks are spectacular regardless.

Fishing

The Kaipara Harbour is one of New Zealand's best fishing spots. Snapper, kahawai, and flounder are common catches. Bring your own gear or ask the team at Henare for local recommendations.

Getting to Pouto Point

Pouto Point is approximately 3 hours from Auckland via SH16 through Helensville and Dargaville. The last section of road is unsealed but well-maintained. A standard 2WD vehicle is fine in dry conditions.
