Russell is one of New Zealand's most charming towns — historic, unhurried, and beautifully positioned on the Bay of Islands. Here's everything you need to know.
Getting to Russell
Russell is accessible two ways: by car via Opua (with a short car ferry crossing to Okiato) or by passenger ferry from Paihia. The passenger ferry runs frequently and takes about 15 minutes. The car ferry runs every 10–20 minutes and takes about 10 minutes. Russell is approximately 3 hours from Auckland via SH1.
What to Do in Russell
Bay of Islands Sailing
The Bay of Islands has 144 islands and some of the best sailing in New Zealand. Day cruises, dolphin watching, and private charters are available from both Russell and Paihia. The Cream Trip — a full-day cruise around the islands — is a classic.
Russell Coastal Walk
The Russell coastal walk takes you through pohutukawa forest along the waterfront. It's an easy, beautiful walk that takes about 1–2 hours return. The views back across the bay are excellent.
Waitangi Treaty Grounds
A short ferry ride from Russell, the Waitangi Treaty Grounds is New Zealand's most significant historic site. Guided tours run daily and include a cultural performance. Allow 2–3 hours.
Pompallier Mission
New Zealand's oldest surviving industrial building, the Pompallier Mission is a beautifully restored 1840s Catholic mission house. Guided tours are available.
Where to Eat in Russell
Russell has a small but excellent dining scene. The Duke of Marlborough Hotel on the waterfront is a classic — great for a sunset drink. For dinner, The Gables Restaurant is the local favourite. For breakfast, head to the Russell Bakery.
