Horse trekking at Pouto Point is one of the most memorable experiences in Northland — and one of the most underrated in New Zealand.

Where to Go Horse Trekking in Northland

The best horse trekking in Northland is at Pouto Point on the Kaipara Harbour. Rides take you along remote west coast beaches, through open farmland, and across the Pouto Peninsula with views to both the Kaipara Harbour and the Tasman Sea.

The combination of wild beaches, open landscape, and almost no other people makes this one of the most extraordinary riding experiences in New Zealand.

What to Expect

Rides are suitable for all experience levels, including beginners. Horses are well-trained and matched to rider experience. You'll ride along beaches, through dunes, and across open farmland. The pace is relaxed — this isn't a fast-paced trail ride. It's about the landscape.

How to Book

Book directly through henarehorsetreks.co.nz. Henare lodge guests can also mention it at the time of booking and the team will help coordinate.

What to Wear

Wear long pants (jeans or riding pants are ideal), closed-toe shoes or boots, and a layer you don't mind getting dusty. Helmets are provided. Sunscreen and sunglasses are essential in summer.

When to Go

Horse trekking is available year-round at Pouto. Summer (December–February) is warmest but can be busy. Autumn (March–May) offers excellent conditions and fewer crowds. Winter rides have a wild, atmospheric quality that many guests prefer.
