Northland is one of New Zealand's most rewarding road trip destinations — and it's right on Auckland's doorstep. Here's the best itinerary.
Day 1: Auckland to Pouto Point (via Kaipara)
Head north from Auckland on SH16 through Helensville and into the Kaipara region. Stop at the Kaipara Harbour lookout near Maungaturoto for your first views of the harbour. Continue through Dargaville and down the Pouto Peninsula to Pouto Point. Check in to your lodge and spend the evening watching the sun set over the Kaipara Harbour.
Day 2–3: Pouto Point
Spend two nights at Pouto. Day activities: horse trekking with Henare Horse Treks, the Pouto Lighthouse walk, sand dunes, and beach walks. Evenings: hot tub, sauna, and stargazing. This is the most remote and wild part of the itinerary — embrace the quiet.
Day 4: Pouto to Russell (via Dargaville & Whangarei)
Head back up the peninsula and north through Dargaville. Stop at the Kauri Museum in Matakohe — one of the best regional museums in New Zealand. Continue north through Whangarei to Opua, take the car ferry to Okiato, and drive into Russell. Check in to Wahapu Lodge.
Day 5: Russell & Bay of IslandsSpend the day exploring Russell and the Bay of Islands. Morning: walk the Russell coastal track. Afternoon: take a private charter with Kōtare Quest Charters — departing from Russell, fully private, maximum six guests. Evening: dinner at The Gables, then back to the lodge for a soak in the outdoor bath.
>Practical Notes- Total driving: approximately 6–7 hours over 5 days
- Road conditions: mostly sealed; Pouto Peninsula has unsealed sections
- Best time: October–April for warmest weather; March–May for fewer crowds
- Book lodges and horse trekking well in advance in summer
