The Pouto Lighthouse marks the entrance to the Kaipara Harbour — New Zealand's largest harbour. The walk to it is short, beautiful, and one of the highlights of a Pouto stay.

About the Walk

The Pouto Lighthouse walk is a short, easy track that takes you from the road end out to the historic lighthouse at the tip of the Pouto Peninsula. The walk is approximately 30–45 minutes return and is suitable for all fitness levels.

What You'll See

The lighthouse itself is a historic iron structure, first lit in 1884. From the lighthouse, you have views across the Kaipara Harbour entrance — one of the most dangerous harbour bars in New Zealand — to the Kaipara Heads on the opposite shore.

On a clear day, you can see the Tasman Sea to the west and the harbour stretching north and east. The combination of wild dunes, crashing surf, and the vast harbour is extraordinary.

Getting There

The lighthouse is at the end of the Pouto Peninsula road, approximately 5 minutes drive from the Henare lodges. Park at the road end and follow the track to the lighthouse.

Best Time to Visit

The lighthouse is beautiful at any time of day, but sunset is particularly spectacular. The light changes colour over the harbour and the dunes glow golden. Allow time to linger.

Combining with Other Activities

The lighthouse walk pairs well with a beach walk on the west coast (accessible from near the lighthouse) and a visit to the sand dunes. Allow half a day for the full combination.

Staying at Pouto

The three Henare lodges — Kaipara, Kauri, and Kapia — are a short drive from the lighthouse. Book direct for the best rate.
