Packing for a lodge stay in Northland is different from packing for a hotel. Here'\''s everything you need — and what you can leave at home.
What's Provided
All Henare lodges provide: hotel-quality linen and towels, a fully equipped kitchen (pots, pans, utensils, coffee machine, toaster), toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, body wash), and a BBQ.
You don't need to bring any of this. Focus on what you actually want to do.
Clothing
Northland has a warm, subtropical climate but can be unpredictable. Pack:
- Layers — mornings and evenings can be cool, especially at Pouto
- A light waterproof jacket
- Swimwear (for the hot tub, outdoor bath, and beach)
- Comfortable walking shoes or boots
- Jandals (essential in summer)
- Long pants for horse trekking (if you're going)
For Outdoor Activities
- Sunscreen (Northland sun is strong)
- Sunglasses and a hat
- Insect repellent (sandflies can be present near water)
- A torch or headlamp for evening walks
- Binoculars (excellent birdwatching at Pouto)
For Stargazing (Pouto)
- A blanket or sleeping bag
- Red-light torch
- Star map app (Stellarium)
- Camera with manual mode
Food & Drink
For Pouto, the nearest supermarket is New World in Dargaville (45 minutes away). We recommend doing a full shop on the way — the lodges have fully equipped kitchens and it's much more enjoyable to cook in than to drive out for every meal. For Russell, there is a Four Square supermarket in Russell township, just 7 minutes from Wahapu Lodge, for top-ups and everyday essentials. For a larger shop, Pak'nSave in Kerikeri is 30 minutes away.
